A sort of unselfish selfishness by WARD GREENE When a man is ten, he has a boy's faith in almost everthing: even Santa Claus is a belief he is not quite ready to give up so long as there is a chance the old gentleman may really live and deliver. When a man is twenty, he is closer to compete disillusion and stronger conviction than he will probably ever be in his life. This is the age of atheists and agnostics; it is also the age of martyrs. Jesus Christ must have been a very young man when he died on the cross; Joan of Arc, they say, was only nineteen as the flames consumed her. It is in the later years---oh, anywhere from thirty to fifty---that a man at some time stands with the tatters of his hopes and dreams fallen from him and asks himself:"What, indeed, do i believe?" He is very apt, then, to cling to the words of other men who have written for him the shadow signposts that come as anything to poiting pathways he found best in the past and roads he will trust on the way ahead. These words may be mere copybook maxims: that honesty is the best policy, or haste makes waste. They may be alone from Shakespeare--- "To thine own self be true"---or from the bible---"All things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them"---or from the poets" i myself am Heaven and Hell". They may seem a sort of hodgepodge in a man's mind, yet they can make a pattern not inconsistent and not weak. So if i believe that i myself am Heaven and Hell, that anything less than honesty to myself and others is a boomerang on them and me; if my translation of the Golden Rule is simple acts of kindness and understanding and compassion, practiced in the hope that they will be shown to me, then i have a way of life that is a sort of unselfish selfishness. The bald statement may sound cynical, but if i can follow that way, i shall not be too unhappy here and i may face death with regret but an untroubled face and a stout heart. But there are blocks and pitfalls in a way of life, even assuming that a man can adhere to it steadfastly despite his own inclinations to deviate. These obstacles are the work other men who adhere to other ways. Hence kindness and compassion are not enough. A man, i believe, must have courage and fortitude and a burning sense of justice, too. There are times we should turn the other cheek, but there are likewise times when we must fight the good fight. When? Well, if a fellow can't find the answer on the signposts or in his heart, i guess he has just got to pray. A Mask was Stifling Me'); Lucy Freeman 露西? I believe that everyone wants to love and be loved and that happiness stems from a facing and acceptance of self that allows you to give and receive love. Some think of love as a passionate, hungry, dramatic feeling, all consuming in intensity and desire. As I see it, this is, rather, immature love: it is a demand on others, not a giving of oneself. Mature love, the love that brings happiness, flows out of an inner fullness, and accepts, understands and is tender toward the other person. It does not ask to be served but only where it may serve. Six years ago I could hardly breathe because of acute sinus. My stomach was always upset and full of queasiness and I had trouble sleeping, even though I felt exhausted all the time. In desperation, after doctors who treated the physical symptoms failed to ease the pain, I tried psychoanalysis. I was lucky to find a wise, compassionate man who showed me what it meant to be able to trust myself and others. The physical ills are gone, but more than that, I have at long last started to acquire a philosophy of living. I had never possessed one. I had lived on dogma and dicta which I had accepted unquestioningly through the years, even though I believed little of it, because I feared to question. But by being unable to live naturally and at peace with myself I was flying in the face of nature. She was punishing me with illness and, at the same time, informing me all was not well just in case I wanted to do something about it. In order to change, I needed help in facing myself. For me it was not easy to “know thyself”. All my life I had accepted the lesser of the two evils and run away from self because truth was more dangerous. Once I thought that to survive I had to put on a mask and forget what lay underneath. But masks are false protections and the inner part of me refused to go unheard forever. It caught up eventually, and unless it was to master me I had to face such feelings as fear, anger, envy, hatred, jealousy and excessive need for attention. When I realized I could not have done anything else except what I did, I was able to like myself more and be able to like others not for what they could give me but for what I could give to them. The Bible shows the way to easy, happy living in many of its pages. It advises, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Those who expect the most are apt to receive the least. I had expected much and was filled with fury because nothing in the outside world relieved my emptiness and despair. Nothing did, either, until I could face the anger and fury, the emptiness and despair, and slowly start to know such new feelings as compassion, conviction, control, calm. I learned, too, of reason—that judicious combination of thought and feeling that enables me to take more responsibility for myself and others, that allows me to slay the ghosts of the past. For me there is much hard work ahead to achieve greater happiness. Yet, the very struggle I have put into achieving a measure of it makes happiness that much more dear. The Law of the Heart by J. George Frederick J.乔治? At long last I have come to a rather simple point as to what I believe. I believe in what I choose to call “The Law of the Heart”. In the medical world this phrase, The Law of the Heart, means the great discovery by Professor Ernest Henry Starling of the precise method by which the heart accelerates and retards itself through the heart muscle; also the manner in which it accomplishes the vital twoway exchange of fluids between the bloodstream and the body tissues. In my view of life there is also supremely needful a vital twoway exchange of heart qualities between human beings. Without it the human spirit and relationship to other spirits is lifeless and dangerous. Dependence on head qualities is mechanical and empty, just as we have discovered that babies do not thrive, even with technically expert nursing care, without mother love. The Law of the Heart, in my belief, then, means that I can achieve greatest physical and mental health, and have the most constructive relations with life and people, if my matured emotional self dominates my motives and actions. When, after due consultation with my head, the true heart speaks, it is the finest and most mellowed judgment that I, human creature, am capable of. Man is indivisible, I believe; he is a whole; mind, spirit, body—but with only one real, fully representative voice—the voice of the heart. There is, in my belief, very suggestive symbolism in the means by which the Law of the Heart operates. We know that man needs to give others weaker, less fortunate, a transfusion of his blood as proof of fellowship. We know that hearts and arteries which are hard and unresponsive can bring the retribution of sudden death. We know that hearts which beat in unison with the problems, pains, miseries and needs of others know celestial music which can never be known to those who do not. We know that hearts capable of quickened pulse at the sight of beauty and nobility, courage and sacrifice, love and tenderness, a child or a sunset, achieve intensities of living—a song in their hearts—unknown to others. We know that those who choke off the heart’s native impulses will likely bring on a coronary thrombosis of obstructed emotion which can cripple. The first Law of the Heart, I feel sure, is to pulsate, to love. To fail to pulsate and love is swift and certain spiritual death. There are far, far too many of us who seem obsessed with self, unable or unwilling to love. The second Law of the Heart, I believe, is to give, and forgive, to sacrifice. The heart is the great supplier and giver to every remote atom in the body. The heart muscle is the strongest in the whole body. These things I know and believe, and they provide me with the foundation of what I call my humanistic philosophy of life. It works for me. I feel close to the earth with it. Yet face uplifted. The heart is closer to everlasting reality, although I am fully aware that I must not let raw emotion masquerade as a heart quality, and that the immature heart can make serious errors. The educated, matured heart is, to my belief, not only the noblest thing in man but also the great hope of the world.

What's more, almost all the audiences supported Brazil team. It seemed to win the match was not possible for the Chinese team, but the girls were very strong and insistented to fight for the last mimute. Even they lost the first game, they never gave up. Especially for the last two point, they were so brave and finally won the match. This is the spirit of women's volleyball team, we saw these girls fight for the last minute, they are the best team. Nowadays, with the rapid development of information technology, internet and electronic commerce have been very popular in our daily lives.

Don’t save what is left after spending. But spend what is left after savings. Wanting to save money is not enough. Anyway, there are a lot of things which didn’t come true although you wanted them to. Saving is a technique . It’s simple. It’s just not easy. If you only come to think about saving after you spend, there is no chance for you to accumulate a considerable fortune, because spending is always irrational. The way that works is to make plans in advance. Would it be too much to use 40% of my income to rent an apartment? Is it really enough to save just 20% every month? Only by making it clear how much you want to save can you come to know how much you can actually spend. 二:真正有意义的生活 What will matter? Ready or not, some day it will all come to an end. There will be no more sunrises, no days, no hours or minutes. All the things you collected, whether treasured or forgotten, will pass to someone else. Your wealth, fame and temporal power will shrivel to irrelevance. It will not matter what you owned or what you were owed. Your grudges, resentments, frustrations, and jealousies will finally disappear. So, too, your hopes, ambitions, plans, and to-do lists will all expire. The wins and losses that once seemed so important will fade away. It won't matter where you came from, or on what side of the tracks you lived. It won't matter whether you were beautiful or brilliant. Your gender, skin color, ethnicity will be irrelevant. So what will matter? How will the value of your days be measured? What will matter is not what you bought, but what you built; not what you got, but what you gave. What will matter is not your success, but your significance. What will matter is not what you learned, but what you taught. What will matter is every act of integrity, compassion, courage and sacrifice that enriched, empowered or encouraged others to emulate your example. What will matter is not your competence, but your character. What will matter is not how many people you knew, but how many will feel a lasting loss when you're gone. What will matter is not your memories, but the memories of those who loved you. What will matter is how long you will be remembered, by whom and for what. Living a life that matters doesn’ t happen by accident. It s not a matter of circumstance but of choice. Choose to live a life that matters. Warren Buffet once said: "If you don’t find a way to make money while you sleep, you will work until you die." Sounds ridiculous in the first place, right? Isn’t that obvious? And how on earth can it be possible to make money while you sleep? If you want to have an income, you have to work, right? But no, what he said is not wrong. That way which he described as to make money while you sleep is called investing. Normal middle-class use their skills and time to make money. But the rich use their money to make money. They invest the money that they own now to make ROI, which means return on investment. It’s not a hard thing to do, because there are a lot of ways to manage your personal finance. In the past, I usually spent as much as I could earn in a month. But when I saw this quote of Buffett, I suddenly realized: Isn’t that making all my efforts in vain? Because I have nothing left. I didn’t make anything for my future. That’s why I started to face the truth of how I was living. And I made some bold changes and began to save money. I wish that there is a day when I no longer need to work and can use money to make money.

He was content because he was happy. One day a wise man came to him and told him about the glory of diamonds and the power that goes along them. The wise man says, “If you had a diamond the size of your thumb, you could have your own city. If you had a diamond the size of your fist you could probably own your own country.” And then he went away. That night the farmer couldn't sleep. He was unhappy and he was discontent. He was unhappy because he was discontent, and he was discontent because he was unhappy. The next morning he made arrangements to sell off his farm, took care of his family and went in search of diamonds. He looked all over Africa and couldn't find any. He looked all through Europe and couldn’t find any. When he got to Spain, he was emotionally, physically and financially broke. He got so disheartened that he threw himself into the Barcelona River and committed suicide. Back home, the person who had bought his farm was watering the camels at a stream that ran through the farm. Across the stream, the rays of the morning sun hit a stone and made it sparkle like a rainbow. He thought it would look good on the mantelpiece. He picked up the stone and put it in the living room. That afternoon the wise man came and saw the stone sparkling. He asked, "Is Hafiz back?" The new owner said, "No, why do you ask?" The wise man said, "Because that is a diamond. I recognize one when I see one." The man said, "No, that's just a stone I picked up from the stream. Come, I'll show you. There are many more.' They went and picked some samples and sent them for analysis. Sure enough, the stones were diamonds. They found that the farm was indeed covered with acres and acres of diamonds. 英语美文小短文欣赏篇二 你多大年纪how old are you if we did not know our age, some of us would appear to be very young, and some of us would seem very old. sometimes, people use age as a convenient excuse. “i am too old to start something new,” or, “i couldn’t learn that at my age.” other people, though, go on to achieve their greatest accomplishments in life in later years. take, for example, colonel harland sanders who started franchising his chicken outlets when he was 65 years old, duanwenw.com up to the age of 90 years old he traveled 250000 miles a year visiting kfc franchises. he didn’t let age stand in his way! feeling lead to attitudes, attitudes become beliefs, and beliefs become the basis for actions. it is not important how old you are; 多大年纪并不重要 it is how you feel, how you think, duanwenw.com 重要的是你之所想你之所感 and what you do that is important. 以及你之所为 to quote satchel paige, “how old would you be if you didn’t know how old you was?” 适合初中生的英语美文篇三 an individual human life should belike a river生命应该像条河 whether sixty or sixteen, there is the desire of wonders, the endless pure desire of what’s next and the joy of the game of living in every human being’s heart. in the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station: it receives messages of beauty, hope, pleasure, courage and power from men, and all these things keep you young. an individual human life should be like a river —small at first, narrowly contained within its banks and rushing passionately duanwenw.com past rocks and over waterfalls. gradually, the river grows wider and the banks fall back, the water flows more quietly. in the end, without any visible break, they come together in the sea and painlessly lose their individual being. youth means courage over shyness and the adventurous spirit of deserting the love of ease. duanwenw.com this often exists in a man of sixty more than a boy of twenty. nobody grows old merely by a number of years. we grow old by deserting our ideals. years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up passion wrinkles the soul. worry, fear and self-distrust bow the heart and turn the spirit back into dust.

He found a dozen lawyers in the main lobby and told them that they were a jury. The lawyers thought this would be a novel experience and so followed the judge back to the courtroom. The trial was over in duanwenw.com about 10 minutes and it was very clear that the defendant was guilty. The jury went into the jury-room, the judge started getting ready to go home, and everyone waited. After nearly three hours, the judge was totally out of patience and sent the bailiff into the jury-room to see what was holding up the verdict. When the bailiff returned, the judge said, “Well have they got a verdict yet?” The bailiff shook his head and said, “Verdict? Hell, they’re still doing nominating speeches for the foreman’s position!” An old story goes that once there were four single men, leading very boring lives. none of them were married, or had lovers, or did anything exciting. they just sat around all day and played mahjong. One day they played mahjong from 11 in the morning until 11 at night. during the game, no matter who won, the winning card was always the "four columns" card (the card shows four independent, parallel columns in two lines). even more of a coincidence, it was nov 11, or 11/11. in order to commemorate the day, they nicknamed it singles day. Singles day was first celebrated at various universities in nanjing, capital city of jiangsu province during the 1990s. it got the name singles day because the date is comprised of four "ones". these college students have since graduated, and carried their university tradition into society. singles day is now a special day for all fashionable youths. The main way to celebrate singles day is to have dinner with your single friends, but it's important that each person pay their own way to show their independence. people also hold "blind date" parties in an attempt to bid goodbye to their single lives. Sushi has a very interesting origin that has lasted for centuries and continues to be a very popular food today. sushi is made with a combination of shellfish, cooked or raw fish, vegetables, and seasoned rice. although sushi is most commonly linked to the japanese heritage, it actually began in china during the 7th century. At that time, any fish caught had to be preserved. the only method possible was by fermentation. raw fish was cleaned, filleted, and then pressed between layers of heavy salt and usually weighted down with some type of stone. the fish would remain this way for weeks at which the stone would be removed and then replaced with some type of light cover. the fish would stay in the salt layers for a couple of months until the fermentation process was complete. Over time, a discovery was made that by rolling the fish in rice that had been soaked in vinegar the fish was fermented in a matter of days rather than months. the rice was then tossed out and the fish eaten. however, with drought and a food shortage, people began consuming the rice as well as the fish and thus, sushi as we know it today was born. However, in the 1800s, a famous chef by the name of yohei was planning a large dinner party. finding that he had not set out enough fish to serve his guests, he took a piece of fish from the freezer that had not been fermented and decided to take his chances in serving it. what he found was that frozen fish actually retained their flavor and any bacterium was killed. from this discovery, yohei created two styles of sushi —one called edo, and the second, osaka, for the city. Sushi is usually consumed with hot green tea. gari (thin slices of vinegar pickled ginger root) is offered free and eaten between bites to freshen the palate. two kinds of sauces are usually available: one is soy sauce, which is poured on most kinds of sushi; the other is a thick sweet sauce used on eel. wasabe (hot, green japanese horseradish) can be added to make it spicier. Sushi has taken the world by storm and today is a multi-billion dollar industry. the popularity of sushi continues to rise in that people are looking for healthy food that is quick and easy to make. With such incredible popularity as well as the health benefits of eating sushi, it is likely that this food will continue to be a part of everyday life for many more centuries to come.
